LASIK Surgery

LASIK surgery is currently the most popular form of refractive surgery done.  LASIK is a form of refractive surgery that is used to correct moderate vision issues such as:

How It Works

During LASIK surgery a small flap is created in the cornea using a microkeratome blade or a femtosecond laser.  The surgeon then folds the flap back and removes some of the corneal tissue using an excimer laser.  The flap is then folded back to cover where the tissue was removed.

To correct nearsightedness, the goal of the surgeon is to flatten the steep cornea.  To correct farsightedness, the goal of the surgeon is to create a steeper cornea.  LASIK can be used to correct astigmatism by smoothing the irregular cornea to as close to the normal shape as possible.

LASIK is not for everyone and may not correct the condition to what you desire it to be.  In order to ensure a successful result, a laser refractive surgery consultation is needed in order for our Optometrist to assess your eyes and their overall health. During this examination the doctor will also determine what kind of correction is needed and will be able to determine how much of the corneal tissue will need to be removed.  At this point the doctors will also ask you of any other health issues that you may be facing, as certain medical conditions may render you unfit for surgery.

If deemed a candidate, you will be referred to an Ophthalmologist that will perform the actual procedure.

How To Care For Your Eyes After Surgery

After surgery, be sure to keep your eyes dry (temporarily).  Out doctor will give you a prescription to prevent inflammation or infection; you should not use any other forms of eye drops unless they have been approved by your doctor (such as what is needed for management of dry eye or glaucoma.  These drops will also keep your eyes moist after the surgery.  These drops may also burn slightly and cause your vision to become blurry for a short period of time after used.

The healing time for LASIK surgery is extremely fast; most patients notice an improvement in vision within the first few days of surgery, with side effects dissipating after just a few days.
