In 2003, Dr. Dittman, along with his wife and 2-year old daughter, were living in Parkersburg, WV but decided they wanted to move back to the Butler area where both he and his wife are from. Dr. Dittman grew up in Northern Butler County (Karns City), and his wife is from Butler.
Once they decided to relocate, Dr. Dittman said they began searching in the Butler area and discovered that Dr. Weissman, an ophthalmologist who was practicing in Downtown Butler, was looking to retire. “We decided to make the leap of faith and move back “home” at that time and never looked back,” Dr. Dittman said.
He purchased the practice from Dr. Weissman in 2003 and began the journey of growing his practice and providing quality eye care to the Butler area.
In the early days, Dr. Dittman said the practice was completely different than it is today. Dr. Dittman said when he purchased the building, only the first floor of the building was being used, which had not been remodeled since 1982.
“Sherry who has worked for me for 13 years said when she walked in for an interview she had the inclination to turn around and leave as soon as she stepped inside our building. I am glad she stayed,” Dr. Dittman said.
He said when they first opened the practice, they had two employees, a lot of equipment, and an office that needed to be updated. “We went through two major remodels in 2008 and 2013, with the last one expanding our size from 2000 to 6000 sq ft by remodeling all three floors of our building and installing an elevator,” Dr. Dittman said.
He said the remodel began on the first floor while they remained open to see patients. He said due to the remodel, patients had to be escorted around the work areas for about six months.
“In 2013, the remodel was quite a bit larger, and we had a huge garbage chute that looked like an indoor water slide hanging out of our 2nd and 3rd floor windows for months. The noise was so loud we would have to yell at times just to be heard, especially as they built the elevator shaft” Dr. Dittman said.
Dr. Dittman said when they re-opened, it was very odd to have use of all three floors but he said they have implemented many systems that allow them to see patients on multiple floors at a very efficient pace. “This has allowed us to grow from two staff and one doctor to 15 staff and three doctors,” Dr. Dittman said.

Thank you for being a valued patient at Dittman Eyecare. Unfortunately, as you most likely already know the governor of PA, Tom Wolf mandated all non-life sustaining businesses close their doors immediately. As eye care providers that means we are allowed to only to take care of ocular emergencies.
As of now here are our plans:
At Dittman Eyecare we want you to know that we thank you for trusting us with your eye care needs. We also wish everyone stays healthy and keeps a positive mindset in these trying days, and we look forward to when we can open our doors and go back to business as usual!
Please reach out to us if any questions.
