When people hear the term “pink eye” they immediately think of contracting it in school. Pathogenic conjunctivitis – pink eye caused by a virus or bacteria – is the most well known version of conjunctivitis, though it is not the only one.
Many people suffer from seasonal allergies, of which conjunctivitis can be a symptom. If you have not been allergy tested, you may be able to find relief by using antihistamine eye drops or oral medication. We recommend allergy testing so as to determine the exact cause of your allergic conjunctivitis.
Pathogenic pink eye is contagious, and it can quickly spread throughout a population (such as a classroom). Certain types of viruses and bacteria cause pathogenic pink eye. Some cases will be left for the pathogen to run their course, though bad cases of bacterial conjunctivitis may be treated with antibiotics.

Pink eye is generally diagnosed during a routine eye exam. We may collect fluid samples if your case of pink eye is quite severe.
Some forms of pathogenic conjunctivitis are left to resolve on their own. Antibiotics may be prescribed if your case of bacterial conjunctivitis is severe or not resolving within a reasonable time frame.
Conjunctivitis that is the result of allergies can be treated with prescription or over the counter antihistamines. There are antihistamine eye drops that are effective, or you can use an oral allergy medication.
