What to Expect When Beginning Dry Eye Treatment with Optilight

For patients with dry, itchy, and irritated eyes, we recommend treatment with OptiLight by Lumens. This safe and gentle treatment is specifically designed to treat dry eyes. It is the first and only treatment that is IPL FDA-approved for dry eye management.
OptiLight is a light-based treatment that is non-invasive and is done in the area below the eyes to help manage dry eye symptoms.

How Does OptiLight Work?

Optilight dry eye treatment | Dittman EyecareOptiLight treatment uses precise light pulses to help reduce inflammation, increase your meibomian gland functionality, and improve tear break-up time. With OptiLight, we can help you relieve dry eye indicators as well as help you:
  • Reduce the number of bacteria and Demodex mites that live around the eyes.
  • Eliminate the blood vessels that contribute to inflammation.
  • Increase your tear break-up time.
  • Improve your meibomian gland function.

What Can I Expect During My Treatment with OptiLight?

A week before treatment, we recommend that you avoid using products such as:
  • Retin-A
  • Retinol
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Glycolic or salicylic acids
  • Astringents
  • Vitamin C
You also want to avoid using depilatory cream or waxing. If you wear contacts, do not wear them on the day of treatment. We recommend you arrive at your appointment with a clean face with no lotions or makeup.
Once you’ve signed any required consent forms and asked the technician any questions, you will begin your treatment. This is a fast and simple process where we apply a coupling gel to your treatment area and then cover the eyes with shields. Once we’ve applied the light to your skin, you may feel a warm sensation. You can expect a gentle treatment with minimal discomfort that will last around 10 to 15 minutes.
Immediately after OptiLight treatment, you can resume your normal activities. We will schedule a follow-up appointment with you for a few weeks after treatment to monitor our progress.
In some cases, patients will experience soreness, slightly pink skin, or peeling of the skin. You may also have direr eyes for 1-3 days. We recommend using artificial tears after treatment to help relieve this dryness until the side effects disapparate.
